Intercoat Clear or Final Clear? Which Does Your Custom Paint Job Need?

Intercoat Clear or Final Clear? Which Does Your Custom Paint Job Need?

You've picked the color and planned the graphics. Now you need to decide which clear belongs where.

Intercoat clear carries approved effects or protects intermediate artwork. Final clear forms the finished outer layer and supplies its specified appearance and protection. A layered custom paint job may need both.

At Revolt Auto Paint, we want your clear choice to match the work ahead. Here's how to decide what belongs between the color layers, what belongs on top, and what to check before you order.

Key takeaways

  • Use intercoat when the approved process calls for an effect carrier or artwork barrier.
  • Use final clear to complete an exterior basecoat/clearcoat finish.
  • A premixed pearl basecoat may not need a separate intercoat.
  • Check compatibility, masking time and recoat limits before spraying.

What Is the Difference Between Intercoat Clear and Final Clear?

Intercoat clear works within the paint job. Final clear provides the finished surface. Their clear appearance doesn't make them interchangeable.

An intercoat can serve as a carrier, the liquid coating that holds compatible pearl, flake or candy concentrate. Some intercoats also protect underlying color during graphics work. Candy means a transparent color layer that lets the base show through.

Final clear completes the coating system. Choose it around the intended appearance, exposure and finishing work, including sanding and polishing when the product permits them.

What matters

Choose your clear by its documented role. Even an intercoat that uses hardener still needs the finishing layers its manufacturer specifies.

When Do You Need Intercoat as Well as Final Clear?

You need both when the approved process uses an intermediate carrier or protective layer before the final finish. The artwork and paint format drive that choice.

A Straight Color Job

For a compatible basecoat/clearcoat system, you can often apply final clear directly over the basecoat within its recoat window. That window sets the allowed time for applying the next coating.

If you're choosing custom automotive paint colors in Texas, check the color's instructions before adding an intercoat to the order. Extra material adds another application stage, so give it a defined purpose.

Graphics and Masking

An approved intercoat can separate the underlying color from later artwork and masking. We carry Custom Creative AG710 intercoat clear for compatible candy, pearl, flake and graphics applications.

Customer Jason “Pacman” Pavone describes AG710 as “perfect for mixing candy concentrates” in his product review.

Follow its masking instructions. A protective layer doesn't make every tape, drying time or underlying coating suitable.

Pearl and Flake Effects

When ordering custom pearl paint in California, check whether you have a premixed pearl basecoat or dry pearl powder. A premixed coating already contains a binder. A dry additive needs an approved carrier.

For custom flake paint for automotive work, confirm the flake size, carrier and topcoat plan together. Don't assume an effect carrier also supplies the thickness you need for later sanding and polishing.

Planning example: A solid-color panel may allow direct final clearing. Add a dry pearl effect and taped graphics to that same panel, and your shopping list may need a carrier, an artwork barrier and final clear. Price the whole process before quoting the job.

Can You Swap Intercoat Clear and Final Clear?

Only follow a substitution when the coating manufacturer approves that use and explains the process.

  • Using intercoat as the final finish: Plan an approved final clear over an intermediate product. Transparency doesn't establish weather resistance or UV protection.
  • Using final clear between artwork stages: Confirm that the system allows it. Follow the clear's drying, sanding and recoating requirements before continuing the design.

Don't choose solely by the terms 1K and 2K. These distinguish a single-component coating from one that uses a hardener. They don't tell you where the product belongs in the paint sequence.

For custom automotive colors, put the exact clear names and spraying order on the job sheet. Give anyone mixing material the same plan.

What Should You Check Before Masking or Recoating?

Check the actual products, timing and surface condition. A custom job can involve several masking rounds, so plan those pauses before you mix material.

Confirm the Coating System

List your basecoat, effect additive, intercoat, final clear and required components. Check the current technical data sheets, or TDS, for their approved combinations. Products from the same retailer don't automatically form a compatible system.

Separate Flash Time From Masking Time

Flash time gives solvent time to leave a coat before the next application. Permission to apply another coat doesn't automatically mean permission to tape over it.

Check masking readiness and the recoat deadline separately. If artwork will run into another day, confirm the next preparation step before starting.

Protect the Effect Before Sanding

Sanding an exposed pearl or flake layer can disturb the particles and change its appearance. If you miss a recoat window, don't automatically scuff the effect and continue. Check the manufacturer's recovery procedure first.

For example, Kirker's EC310 instructions warn that sanding its effect layer disrupts the additives. That product-specific warning shows why one sanding rule cannot cover every intercoat.

Match Components to Spraying Conditions

If you're applying custom car paint in Florida, match the specified reducer and hardener speed to your actual booth conditions.

Excessive coating thickness and an unsuitable component speed can contribute to trapped solvent and surface defects. Follow the product's application limits. More coats won't fix every problem.

Our guide to reading reducer mixing ratios explains how to identify each component before pouring.

Which Clear Should You Order From Revolt?

Start with the intermediate work, then select the final finish. Match each product to its stage:

  • Custom Creative AG710: Consider it for the compatible intermediate effects and graphics applications described above.
  • RC-357-66 Euro Clear: Our final-clear option for custom work, restorations and overall resprays.
  • Top Shelf 2:1 Clear Coat: An acrylic urethane final clear for complete vehicles and panels, developed with custom finishes and sanding and polishing in mind.

Keep the components matched. Euro Clear specifies the Revolt 380 Series for optional reduction. Top Shelf Clear specifies Top Shelf Reducer. Reducer adjusts spraying consistency; hardener helps the clear cure.

Before committing a vehicle, spray a test panel with the planned layers, masking steps and final clear. Check the appearance and tape behavior. A test panel supports your planning; it doesn't replace documented compatibility.

What Else Should You Know Before Ordering Clear?

Does AG710 Need Hardener?

AG710 is a single-component intercoat. Follow its specified reduction instructions. Other intercoats may use hardener, so check the exact product.

Can I Mix Pearl Into Final Clear?

Only when the pearl and clear manufacturers permit that combination. Follow any requirement for a separate final clear with no added pearl.

Will Clear Fix Patchy Pearl Paint?

No. Correct uneven custom pearl paint before applying final clear. A transparent coating won't redistribute an uneven effect layer.

Can I Use a Matte Final Clear?

Yes, if the coating system approves it. Test the complete finish first to check how the chosen sheen presents the effects.

How Much Clear Should I Buy?

Use the product's coverage guidance and your panel area. For custom automotive flake paint, account for the specified sanding and recoating process and test panels.

Will Final Clear Stop Candy From Fading?

UV-resistant final clear helps protect light-sensitive candy colors. It doesn't justify a promise that every candy finish will retain its color indefinitely.
