How Much Reducer Does Your Paint Need? Reading Ratios Before You Mix
Your paint needs the amount of reducer listed in that coating’s mixing instructions. First, check which product each number represents. A 4:1 ratio may mean paint and hardener, with no reducer included in those numbers.

Does Your Paint Need Reducer, and What Does the Ratio Include?
Check the label or technical data sheet for the exact paint, clear, or primer you plan to spray. The sheet tells you which components to use and how much to add.
A reducer adjusts the paint’s thickness so it sprays as intended. Hardener serves a different purpose: it reacts with the coating to help it cure. They cannot replace each other.
Read the ingredients beside the ratio:
- 1:1 means equal parts of the two named components. Check whether the second component is a reducer or a hardener.
- 4:1 means four parts of the first component and one part of the second.
- 4:1:1 includes three components, each in the stated proportion.
A “part” can be any consistent measure. If one part equals 100 mL, four parts equal 400 mL. Never assume a ratio includes reducer simply because another paint uses it.
How Do You Calculate a 4:1:1 Paint Mix?
Our RC-357-30 Glamour Clear uses four parts clear, one part RH-30 hardener, and one part specified reducer. Its instructions also allow our 380-series reducer if you run out of the supplied reducer.
Starting With the Clear
Suppose you have measured 400 mL of Glamour Clear. Divide that amount by four to find one part: 100 mL. Add 100 mL of the specified hardener and 100 mL of reducer.

These amounts apply to this 4:1:1 recipe. They do not set the ratio for other coatings.
Starting With the Total Batch
If you want 600 mL of mixed material, add the ratio numbers first: 4 + 1 + 1 = 6 parts. Divide 600 by six. Each part equals 100 mL, giving you the second row above. The same method works in fluid ounces. Keep every measurement in the same unit.
When Instructions Say “Add 10% Reducer,” What Is the 10% Based On?
Find the starting quantity named in the instructions. Does the percentage apply to the coating alone, or to the coating plus hardener? If the directions do not say, ask before mixing.
Here is why that detail matters:
- 10% of 400 mL of coating equals 40 mL of reducer.
- 10% of 400 mL of coating plus 100 mL of hardener equals 50 mL of reducer.
These are calculation examples, not a recipe for a particular Revolt product. Neither example matches the earlier 4:1:1 mix, which needs 100 mL of reducer for 400 mL of clear. “One part reducer” and “add 10% reducer” are different instructions.
Write down the starting amount and the required addition before you pour. That quick check helps you avoid using the right percentage on the wrong quantity.
How Do You Use a Paint Mixing Cup Without Misreading the Marks?
Use the scale that matches your product’s ratio. A cup may carry several scales, so check the heading above the marks before you fill it.
- Read the product instructions. Confirm the components, their order, and whether the recipe uses volume or weight.
- Set the cup on a level surface. Use a clean cup suitable for the coating and leave room to stir.
- Choose one batch-size number. Stay with that number across the matching ratio columns.
- Add each component to its mark. The liquid level rises with each addition. Read the marks at eye level.
- Mix as directed. Follow any waiting-time and straining instructions, then check the spray on a test panel.
The marks show the combined fill level after each addition. They are not separate amounts to pour from an empty cup.

Does Hot Weather Change the Reducer Amount or the Speed?
Reducer speed describes how quickly its solvents evaporate. The mix ratio tells you how much to use. Check both before spraying.
Our RR-380 urethane reducer comes in Fast, Medium, Slow, and Extra Slow options. Choose an approved speed for your coating and spray conditions, while keeping the amount within the coating’s instructions.
A hot booth does not give you permission to add an extra splash or change the hardener ratio. If the paint flashes too quickly, review the reducer choice and application conditions. Flash time means the specified waiting time between coats.

What Should You Check Before Adding More Reducer?
If the mix does not spray well, check these details first:
- Did you measure the correct ratio?
- Did you use the specified hardener and an approved reducer?
- Are the paint temperature and gun settings within the product’s instructions?
A rough finish alone does not prove that the paint needs more reducer. Defects can have several causes. Solvent choice, thick coats, short drying times between coats, and heating conditions can all contribute to solvent popping.
If you cannot confirm what went into the cup, stop and get product-specific advice. Guessing at a correction can compound the error.

What Else Should You Know Before Mixing?
Can I Measure a Volume Ratio on a Digital Scale?
Use the manufacturer’s weight formula. Milliliters and fluid ounces measure volume; grams and weight ounces measure mass. Using the same numbers on a scale can change the proportions.
Should I Add Reducer to Paint Sold Ready to Spray?
Follow that product’s directions. Ready-to-spray paint may already contain the required reducer. Do not apply an unreduced paint’s mixing ratio to it.
Can I Use Ordinary Paint Thinner Instead of Urethane Reducer?
Use the solvent your coating specifies. If you’re buying automotive paint thinner in California, check the product’s compatibility before mixing. A general-purpose thinner is not an automatic substitute.
Can I Use the Same Reduction Ratio for Primer and Clear Coat?
Only if their individual instructions call for it. Each coating has its own recipe, and a primer’s mixing instructions may also change with its intended use.
Can I Keep Leftover Paint After Adding Hardener?
Follow the product’s pot life, which is its usable time after activation. A lid does not stop the curing reaction, and adding reducer does not reset that time.
