How-To Guide

How To Paint A Car with Basecoat Clearcoat

1

Prepare the Surface

Sand 180–320 grit, wipe with wax and grease remover. Clean and dry before anything goes on.

2

Apply Primer

DTM or epoxy primer seals the substrate and improves adhesion. Do not skip on bare metal.

3

Sand the Primer

Block sand 400–600 grit. Blow off dust, tack wipe before spraying.

4

Apply Basecoat

2–3 medium wet coats, full flash between each. Uniform coverage, no streaks.

5

Flash the Basecoat

20–30 minutes at 70°F minimum. Spraying over a wet basecoat causes solvent pop — that is a full respray.

6

Mix and Apply 2K Urethane Clear Coat

Mix clear and hardener at the specified ratio. Apply 3 wet coats, 10–15 minutes flash between each.

7

Cut and Buff

Cure 24 hours or bake at 140°F for 30 minutes. Wet sand 800 through 2000, then buff with compound and polish.

FAQs

If You Don't See Yours, Ask Us

A 2K clear coat is a clear coat mixed with a hardener that cures chemically to create a hard, UV-resistant finish. It offers better durability and protection than single-stage coatings and is recommended for vehicles exposed to outdoor conditions.
The best clear coat for basecoat systems depends on the project. Euro Clear works well for custom and flake applications, Glamour Clear is ideal for collision and restoration work, and Top Shelf Clear is designed for complete builds and show-quality finishes.
Most automotive paint jobs require a minimum of three coats of clear coat. For show-quality finishes, painters often apply additional coats with sanding between sessions for enhanced depth and gloss.
Yes. Every clear has reducer temperature options for this reason. In Florida heat or California summers, the slow reducer keeps flash time under control and the finish flowing correctly.
To paint a car with a basecoat clearcoat system, prepare and sand the surface, apply primer, sand the primer smooth, spray 2–3 coats of basecoat with proper flash time, then apply 2K urethane clear coat in wet coats before curing and buffing the finish.
Urethane clear coat is used to protect automotive paint while adding gloss, UV resistance, durability, and long-lasting finish protection for collision, restoration, and custom paint projects.
Yes. Customers can buy automotive clear coat online in California, Florida, and nationwide, including 2K urethane clear coats, high-gloss clear coats, and complete basecoat clearcoat kits.
